Manufacturing processes are critical in determining the success of a product development company as they contribute to manufacturing the products as per customer demand. Business owners of such companies always target improving the manufacturing processes continually. This is done to ensure that the product coming out of a manufacturing process meets the quality and deliverable standards.

Is Manufacturing Process Improvement necessary?

The answer to this question must come from the business owner. The business owner must analyze the answers to three questions to arrive at a decision:

  • Is the manufacturing process delivering at the optimum levels? - This will allow the business owner to know if the processes are lagging somewhere in productivity and quality which hence requires improvement on a continual basis.

  • Does the improvement measure bring in any cost advantages or other advantages like customer satisfaction, shorter lead times etc? - Any smart business owner would analyze this answer very closely. In most cases, cost has been placed on a very high priority for manufacturing processes. At the end of the day, even if the business owner desires improvement for his manufacturing processes, he would need to weigh the measures against benefits.

  • Can the change management accompanying the process improvement measure be done smoothly? - Remember, any process improvement measure can be successful with the active cooperation of all the employees. In most cases, business owners may shelve the process improvement measures if they cannot be transitioned to all the employees rather quickly.

All three questions above are extremely hypothetical in nature and may not have any relevance if the business owner decides to improve the manufacturing processes anyways.

How can Manufacturing Process Improvement be done?

There are many quality standards like Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Total Quality Management etc which provide tools for the process improvement measures to be implemented in a Manufacturing process. In addition to these, people who wish to implement process improvement measures can use Control Charts, Lot Sampling, Process Capability and Value Analysis as effective tools to improve manufacturing processes.

Many people get confused between Business Process Improvement and Manufacturing Process Improvement. The main difference is that where one can see and observe different elements of a Manufacturing Process, business processes are relatively unseen.

This one fact explains the difference in them and also a major advantage of Manufacturing Processes. It is extremely easy for data generation in manufacturing processes. For any process improvement measure, data measurement would need to be relatively easy which manufacturing processes accomplish.

Before a business owner decides on implementing manufacturing process improvement measures, he would need to understand his process well.
